How to choose dining room chairs that are comfortable, beautiful, and built to last

Dining chairs are one of the hardest working pieces in your home. Here's how to find ones that look great, feel even better, and hold up to real life.

Dining chairs simply don't get enough credit. They're used more than most furniture in your home: you sit in them for meals, for coffee, help kids with homework, host dinner parties, play board games and more. And yet, people often treat them as an afterthought or try to save money in the wrong places.

At Roseberry Allen, we believe your dining chairs deserve just as much thought as your sofa or your bed. They need to be comfortable enough to keep guests at the table, durable enough to handle daily use, and beautiful enough to anchor the room. Here's how we help clients choose dining chairs that check all those boxes.

Be ready to make an investment

Good dining chairs aren't cheap. And because you need multiples (usually four, six, or eight), the cost adds up quickly. But this is one area where it's worth spending more upfront.

Cheap chairs break. They're not constructed well, and after a year or two of regular use, they start to wobble or the finish chips. You end up replacing them, which costs more in the long run.

Instead, look for chairs that are built to last. Solid wood frames, proper joinery, quality upholstery. These are pieces that will hold up for years and can even be reupholstered down the line if you want to refresh the fabric. Think of them as an investment in how your family gathers, not just something to fill space around a table.

Comfort is everything

If you want people to actually stay at your table, comfort has to be a priority. A chair that looks beautiful but feels stiff or awkward after 20 minutes isn't doing its job.

We always ask clients: what's the purpose of this space? Is it formal? Casual? Are you hosting big family dinners every weekend, or is this more of a styled moment that gets used occasionally?

If the answer is that you want people to linger, you need a chair with a softer seat and a supportive back. Upholstered chairs are ideal here. They invite you to settle in, have another glass of wine, and to keep talking. If the space is more for show or quick meals, you can get away with something lighter and more sculptural.

But even then, sit in the chair before you buy it. Really sit. Lean back. Imagine being there for an hour. You'll know pretty quickly if it works.

Customization gives you exactly what you want

One of the reasons we love working with upholstery companies for dining chairs is the level of customization. You're not stuck with what's on the showroom floor. You get to choose the stain on the legs, the fabric on the seat, whether the back is upholstered or left open. You can even do host and hostess chairs at the heads of the table that are slightly different from the rest for a more curated, layered look.

This also means you can solve practical problems. If your table has a thick apron, you need to pay attention to the chair's arm height and seat height so everything fits together properly. Custom options let you get the proportions exactly right.

Fabric is your friend (yes, even in the dining room)

We know people worry about fabric in dining rooms. Spills happen. Kids happen. Life happens. However, there are so many performance fabrics now that are stain resistant and easy to clean without sacrificing style.

We love fabric in dining rooms. There aren't a lot of opportunities to bring in softness and texture besides window treatments and a rug, so upholstered chairs give the space a much more welcoming, finished feel. They also make the room quieter, absorbing sound instead of echoing like all-wood chairs can.

If you're still nervous, go with a darker fabric or a pattern that hides wear better than a solid light color. Or choose a performance fabric that can be wiped down. You don't have to sacrifice beauty for practicality anymore.

Mixing is better than matching

People think everything has to match the table, and it absolutely doesn't. In fact, one of our favorite looks is a wood table with upholstered chairs, or a modern table with more traditional seating. It creates contrast and makes the space feel layered and collected instead of like you bought it all in one set.

You can also mix chair styles within the same space. Maybe the side chairs are simpler and the host chairs have arms. Or you use a bench on one side and chairs on the other. These small variations add visual interest and make the room feel more intentional.

Get the scale and proportions right

This is where a lot of people go wrong. They fall in love with a chair online and order it without checking the measurements, only to realize it's too tall, too short, or too wide for their table.

Measure the seat height from the floor to make sure it works with your table. Most dining tables are around 30 inches tall, so you want a chair seat height around 18 to 20 inches. Anything outside of that range starts to feel awkward. You also need to account for the table's apron (the frame under the tabletop). If it's thick, make sure the chair arms or seat will clear it comfortably.

And don't feel like you have to cram as many chairs as possible around the table. Sometimes fewer, larger chairs look better than squeezing in eight tiny ones. Give everything room to breathe so it feels intentional and people can actually move in and out of their seats without bumping elbows.

Choose durability that works for your life

If you have kids, pets, or this is a high-traffic space, you need chairs that can handle it. That doesn't mean they have to look boring or basic. It just means you need to be smart about materials.

Performance fabrics are a must. Wood finishes that hide scratches. Construction that won't wobble after a few months of use. These practical considerations don't limit your style, they just make sure your beautiful dining room stays that way.

The bottom line: Invest in chairs you'll love for years

Dining chairs are one of the most used pieces of furniture in your home, and they deserve to be chosen with care. When you invest in quality, comfort, and a look that feels like you, they become more than just seating. They become the place where your family gathers, where memories are made, and where your home feels most like home.

At Roseberry Allen, we help clients find the perfect dining chairs for their space, their style, and their real life. Whether you're starting from scratch or looking to refresh an existing dining room, we're here to guide you through every decision.
